• 7 INFORMATION SOURCES Introducing students to the concept of research. They consider the various sources of information available and where these can be found.
• 9 WHAT'S IN THE LIBRARY? This page familiarises students with their school library and shows them just how extensive is its range of information. It is aimed at Year 7/8 students who are unfamiliar with the non-fiction aspects of the library.
• 11 GOING PUBLIC Students are introduced to the public library and find out about the use and range of facilities and services there.
• 13 USING ICT This page highlights the information that is available using ICT (Information and Communication Technology).
• 15 COULD YOU TELL ME...? Students are given the opportunity to see the value of people as a source of information.
• 17 OBSERVATION Students are made aware of how difficult it is to make correct observations. They share possible ways of remembering.
• 19 MAKING NOTES 1 - KEY WORDS This page introduces the idea of key words and their importance.
• 21 MAKING NOTES 2 - TABLES This page shows students the advantages of using a table to take notes. It provides them with the opportunity to compare a table with taking notes, and to think about the different uses of each.
• 23 TABLES AND CHARTS This page extends students' awareness of ways to present information in brief, by demonstrating the differences between tables and charts. It builds on their presentation skills.
• 25 PICTURE THIS! Students consider the symbols and pictures that they use to convey information.
• 27 WATCHING THE BOX Students gain an appreciation that the TV is not simply for entertainment, but can be used as a valuable source of information in a number of ways.
• 29 ALPHABETICAL ORDER Students revise and develop their alphabet skills, as a first step in learning to use the library.
• 31 REFERENCE SKILLS This page introduces the Dewey System. It is intended to build on students' understanding of the way in which a library is organised, so that they can use their own libraries effectively. It is aimed at Year 7 students.
• 33 FINDING YOUR SOURCE Students gain experience of using the Dewey System and practice in recording the location of specific information.
• 35 SUMMARISING Students are introduced to summary. They are shown how one sentence can summarise all the detail given in one paragraph.
• 37 HEADLINES This page demonstrates how much information is contained in a newspaper headline.
• 39 SCANNING This page shows students how scanning can help them to understand a piece of writing.
• 41 INSTRUCTIONS PROVIDED Students are given the opportunity to examine writing instructions and come to appreciate the need for clarity and directness in their style.
• 43 CAREER WISE Opportunities are provided for students to develop their knowledge of the library, as well as their research skills. Researching a career provides them with the independent tools to be able to go about this process, at whichever point is most appropriate.
• 45 HANGING ON THE TELEPHONE Students explore the telephone as a research tool, identifying the relative merits of telephone/fax communication.
• 47 PLANNING YOUR HOLIDAY This page shows students the importance of planning.
• 49 TIMETABLES Students learn how timetables are constructed and how they should be read.
• 51 A LETTER TO... This page provides students with the confidence and structure to write for information from companies or organisations. It also reinforces the use of the formal letter.
• 53 SQ3R?! This page introduces a formula that can be used for research, and enables students to remember it. It also uses their presentational skills and their knowledge of symbols and pictures.
• 55 LOOKING INTO, NOT AT Students are introduced to the idea of how useful pictures can be, when researching a topic, in providing information.
• 57 TURN LEFT, THEN RIGHT This page teaches students how important it is to learn to read information from maps and plans.
• 59 USING THE INTERNET Students are given information about the Internet, and help in realising its use as a research tool.
• 61 INTRODUCING... Students learn about the importance of introductions. They are guided towards an individual approach and style for an introduction to a project.
