• 1 WHAT'S WRONG? This page involves students in the consideration of good practice and health and safety issues when using IT. They produce a word-processed consultancy report detailing their conclusions.
• 3 CHILDREN'S MENU This page involves students in the use of word processing and DTP packages, to sort, design and present a children's menu. The activity will also involve the use of a scanner and a graphics program.
• 5 WEDDING DAY Students identify appropriate tasks for IT applications, and research information using CD-ROMs. The page can be used as a means of introducing all the different types of program which are used on the course.
• 7 JUST THE JOB Students use databases to investigate employment opportunities in the hospitality and catering industry.
• 9 RECIPE-COSTING Students recognise and apply the benefits of using spreadsheets for a recipe-costing exercise.
• 11 FINDING A HOTEL This page requires students to set up and use a database, and to practise their letter-writing and word-processing skills. It focuses on the tourist PR industry.
• 13 WHICH METHOD? This page asks students to apply what they have already learned about IT applications to specific tasks in the catering industry. It asks them to carry out a field survey on the use of IT and then to word process a report.
• 15 THEME NIGHT This page involves students in the use of graphics programs, with the aim of producing publicity materials.
• 17 GRUB GUIDE This page asks students to use IT to help them compile and produce a good food guide to the local area. They are encouraged to use a mailmerge facility to formalise their research.
• 19 HOW ARE WE DOING? Students use spreadsheets for the purpose of analysis and to generate diagrams.
• 21 ON THE MOVE This page asks students to design and plan a motorway service station using Computer Aided Design or graphics packages.
• 23 GOING COMPUTERISED This page asks students to use Optical Character Recognition to create a computerised text and then to practise their word processing skills.
• 25 WEB WORLD This page involves students in using computer software and the Internet for research purposes.
• 27 SERVICE SURVEY This page asks students to design a questionnaire and carry out a survey of the school or college canteen services.
• 29 THE RIGHT ADVICE This page involves students in the use of spreadsheets to aid analysis and generate diagrams.
• 31 PARTY PEOPLE This page asks students to research and create a database of catering and party suppliers in the local area.
• 33 SPECIALITY CAKES This page asks students to produce a brochure for a new company. They must design a logo and use DTP to complete the task.
• 35 A DAY IN THE LIFE This page requires students to extract and process data and visuals from the CD-ROM Careers Information Database (CID). The subject area is bar work, but it can be adapted to apply to any profession.
• 37 NEWSLETTER This page requires students to plan and produce a newsletter page. It requires that they learn more DTP skills and understand the possibilities of such programs. It asks students to use text and graphics that they have already created on previous pages. The subject matter is bar work, but it can be easily adapted for use with other subject areas.
• 39 IT'S A MIRACLE This page is designed to focus students on the need to evaluate IT both for their own use and in the context of hospitality and catering. The page could be used to draw together much of the IT work carried out in this course.
