LESSONS

  • 1 LIFESTYLE PROFILES This page asks students to create and use a spreadsheet to process numerical data. The effect of an individual's lifestyle on his or her health is the topic.
  • 3 WHAT'S FOR SUPPER? This page asks students to choose a software application that is capable of manipulating numbers. The task involves thinking about issues of diet.
  • 5 RED-LETTER DAY This page asks students to use a word-processing package, to produce a formal letter. They then have to do a mail merge. This is done in the context of carers assessing possible hazards to the old and infirm at a swimming pool.
  • 7 RISK FACTOR This page asks students to choose and use a DTP program and a graphics application, and then to evaluate their effectiveness. The task focuses on one aspect of safety and teaches the difference between a hazard and a risk.
  • 9 GARDEN DESIGN This page asks students to use a CAD program, to make a plan view of a garden. They are asked to design a garden for a disabled person, thereby focusing their minds on the practical problems that come with being disabled.
  • 11 GROWING UP Students use a spreadsheet to generate graphs, word process text and then combine the two. Stages of growth in children is the subject.
  • 13 LEARNING TO MOVE Students scan the worksheet, manipulate the scanned image and use a DTP package to produce a simple poster. The page teaches some of the different motor development indicators for growing children.
  • 15 GETTING OLD This page asks students to create a directory of organisations that deal with the problems of the elderly. Students need to decide what kind of software is appropriate for this task (such as a database). They will also have to use a word-processing package and mail merge. The subject matter is issues surrounding ageing.
  • 17 A CLASS ACT This page introduces students to careers programs and ways of extracting information from them. You could use either a CD ROM like CID, the Careers Information Database, or a normal program, such as Kudos or Microdoors. The subject matter is jobs in the health service and the concept of different classes in society.
  • 19 A CLASS ACT 2 This page is intended to develop students' spreadsheet skills by asking them to present data in different ways. It also asks them to word process texts and combine them with graphics to produce a final report. The subject matter is social class and how it affects health.
  • 21 KNOW YOUR RIGHTS This page requires students to word process lists of bullet points concerning people's rights under the NHS, and involves students practising their oral skills. The page also contains an element which can be done in a foreign language.
  • 23 BOOKLETS This page asks students to design and print an information booklet on patients' rights. It develops their DTP skills and calls upon them to combine material from a variety of different sources.
  • 25 FINDING A HOME This page requires students to set up a database. Students have to incoporate information from their database into a word-processed letter. The theme of the worksheet is the needs of the elderly.
  • 27 A DAY IN THE LIFE This page requires students to extract and process data and visuals from the CD ROM CID, the Careers Information Database. The subject area is care for the elderly, but it can be adapted to apply to any health and social care profession.
  • 29 NEWSLETTERS This page requires students to plan and produce the opening page of a newsletter, using a DTP package. It asks them to use text and graphics that they have already created on previous worksheets.
  • 31 NEEDS MUST This page asks students to interview health clients about the services they have received. To do this, students have to use a database to design a survey sheet that takes into account clients' needs and feelings. This worksheet is intended to help students improve their oral skills and develop an empathetic attitude.
  • 33 WHAT'S MY LINE? This page asks students to create and interrogate a spreadsheet by inputting data from this page and a careers program. You could use either a CD ROM like CID, the Careers Information Database, or a normal program, such as Kudos or Odyssey. The lesson is intended to provoke discussion around the issue of gender discrimination.
  • 35 MAKE IT SAFE This page deals with health issues surrounding IT. Students learn what the dangers are and what employers are obliged to do to protect employees' health. They then have to design a poster on one of the health issues raised in the worksheet, using a DTP package.
  • 37 LEVEL OF SUPPORT This page asks students to write a report on the care provided in a hospital, using a word-processing package. To do this, they have to analyse the kinds of support somebody who has been involved in a car accident might need, and their responses to those different types of support.
  • 39 BE A CYBERSTUDENT This page asks students to use an encyclopaedia on CD ROM, such as Encarta, and the World Wide Web, to research topics in health and social care.
