Introducing Work

• 7 WHAT IS A JOB? Students produce collages to help them understand the difference between work and leisure.
• 9 BIG DIFFERENCES Students study a picture to identify acceptable and unacceptable behaviour at work, and begin to explore the meaning of 'mature behaviour'.
• 11 A WORLD OF JOBS Students use brainstorming to increase their awareness of the range of jobs people do, and the skills and preferences needed for different types of jobs.
• 13 FINDING OUT MORE Students find out about a number of jobs, gradually building a reference book or display of a variety of jobs.

Core Skills

• 15 MATURE BEHAVIOUR Students use roleplay to explore more fully what 'behaving maturely' means.
• 17 INITIATIVE Students learn the meaning of the phrase 'using my initiative' and roleplay occasions when it might be appropriate to do so.
• 19 CLEANING UP Students explore the importance of completing work tasks carefully, and the consequences that could result when this is not done properly.
• 21 ALONE AND TOGETHER Students identify tasks needing teamwork and tasks where people work alone and consider the advantages, disadvantages and skills needed for both types of work.
• 23 ASKING FOR HELP Students use roleplay to practise asking for help and making themselves understood in a variety of difficult situations.
• 25 TARGET SETTING Students compile a chart showing their abilities in terms of the ten core skills and they think about ways of improving their skills.

Working Knowledge

• 27 WORK TASTER IN SCHOOL Students consider a job task they have undertaken in school and reflect on what it taught them.
• 29 EVALUATING WORK EXPERIENCE IN SCHOOL Students reflect on work experience they have had in school, and consider which core skills they have demonstrated.
• 31 WORKPLACE VISITS Students plan and practise conducting interviews, in preparation for visiting places of work.
• 33 EQUIPMENT Students make collages of tools, equipment and protective clothing, in order to help them focus on these aspects when they go on workplace visits.

Health & Safety

• 37 ACCIDENTS CAN HAPPEN Students look at a number of scenarios to explore how accidents can occur at work, which helps them to consider how such accidents can be prevented.
• 39 WARNING SIGNS Students become familiar with some common warning signs and their meanings.
• 41 PROTECTIVE CLOTHING Students use pictures and collages to find out about the purpose, variety and importance of protective clothing.

Preparation For Work

• 43 PREPARING FOR WORK EXPERIENCE Students begin collecting the practical information they need before attending work experience and they also have a chance to air some of their concerns.
• 45 THE FIRST VISIT Students use roleplay to practise coping with situations that they are likely to encounter on their first visits to work experience placements.
• 47 GOING ON YOUR OWN Students use diagrams to prepare for making the journey to work experience placements on their own and they think about how they might cope with problems that might arise.
• 49 PROBLEMS AT WORK Students consider a number of scenarios showing potentially serious problems at work and devise strategies for dealing with them.
• 51 BREAK TIMES Students think about what they need to know about break times, and reflect on some of the social skills they will need.

Evaluating

• 53 A JOB WELL DONE Students produce certificates to reflect on their work experience and celebrate their achievements.
• 55 A TYPICAL DAY A time line provides a structure for students to recall how they spent their time on work experience and to record it in a way that will help them to remember it.
• 57 THE JOB FOR ME Students design shields showing their preferences concerning work and begin the process of matching their preferences to suitable career plans.
• 59 THE CAREERS OFFICE Students prepare for a visit to the careers office, by finding out what they will need to do and practising reading information from job cards.
