Applying ICT to Science

Price: £35.00
Age Range: KS3 KS4

Non-ICT specialists give students opportunities to develop their ICT skills through the use of ICT tools in Science. The NC PoS for both Science and ICT are met through 10 worksheets at KS3 and 10 at KS4. The pack now also provides extra worksheets on using the Internet for research, a 20-page section of general ICT support for students and a section of teachers' support notes on delivering and applying ICT.

Topics include: Using a database to categorise animals; CD-ROM research; Acids/metals reactivity; Ohms Law; Templated reports; Spreadsheet for data; Graphing results.

The pack includes 5 web-based homeworks which can be set, completed and marked online using our Yacapaca assessment platform. List of homeworks (requires free Yacapaca membership).

SECTION 1: TEACHER SUPPORT NOTES

  • 8 GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR TEACHERS
  • 9 APPLYING ICT TO OTHER CURRICULUM AREAS
  • 10 USING THE INTERNET IN CLASS
  • 11 POTENTIAL PROBLEMS OF APPLYING ICT
  • 12 GUIDELINES FOR WEB-BASED HOMEWORK
  • 13 USEFUL WEBSITES
  • 14 SCIENCE PROGRAMMES OF STUDY
  • 15 ICT PROGRAMMES OF STUDY

SECTION 2: WORKSHEETS TO AID COMPUTER-BASED RESEARCH

  • 21 RESEARCH 1: WHAT'S ON THE NET? Students become acquainted with the main Internet applications.
  • 23 RESEARCH 2: SEARCH ME! This page aims to provide students with an introduction to using search engines, focusing on the different techniques available and on how search engines compare with CD-ROM.
  • 25 RESEARCH 3: INTERNET AND CD-ROM Students make a systematic comparison between information gathering on CD-ROM and Internet, and thereby make their own assessments of each.

SECTION 3: WORKSHEETS APPLYING ICT TO SCIENCE

Key Stage 3

  • 31 MAKING NOTES Students develop WP or DTP skills, while at the same time developing their revision skills - they create a short booklet on the subject of revision, that can be used by others in their class.
  • 33 ANIMAL WORLD Students learn to use a database to categorise animals.
  • 35 SWEET SOLUTIONS Students predict and investigate the factors affecting solubility, input their results into a spreadsheet and create a graphic analysis of the findings.
  • 37 IT'S ELEMENTARY Students use a CD-ROM encyclopedia to research information about the elements in the Earth's crust and display their findings on a poster.
  • 39 NOISY NEIGHBOURS Students use datalogging/spreadsheets to evaluate the results of their work comparing the insulating properties of different materials.
  • 41 SPACE RACE Students use a CD-ROM encyclopedia to gather information and learn about the features of the planets in the solar system.
  • 43 KEEPING COOL Students use the results of a choice chamber experiment to create tables and graphs in a spreadsheet application, and learn how creatures choose the most appropriate environment in which to shelter.
  • 45 SCIENCE TIMES Students explore the background to a major scientific discovery and the scientist who discovered it, and then present the discovery in the form of newspaper articles, set out in a DTP application.
  • 47 DANGEROUS METALS Students explore and compare the reactivity of acids and metals, and then use a database to create a record of the reactions and the times they take to occur.
  • 49 OHM SWEET OHM Students investigate Ohm's Law, then present their findings in a form suitable for primary school children, using a Draw/Paint application.

Key Stage 4

  • 51 GOOD NEWS Students learn to improve the presentation of their experiment reports, by creating template layouts on a WP application. They also learn how using a PC can save time on repetitive tasks.
  • 53 SCIENCE FOR EVERYONE Students use DTP or WP applications to create a new layout for experimental results that will prove attractive reading to non-scientists.
  • 55 HOT WASHES Students explore the effects of temperature on enzyme activity, and then use datalogging and spread-sheet applications to produce their findings.
  • 57 BLOWING BUBBLES Students perform a photosynthesis experiment to measure the amount of oxygen a water plant produces when exposed to a bright light, and use a spreadsheet and graph package to interpret the data.
  • 59 HUNTING THE MOLE Students revise how to calculate the molecular mass of elements and compounds and use a database to set out chemical information on substances.
  • 61 HOME SWEET HOME Students study food webs, creating a database of information from a habitat of their choice.
  • 63 THE CROSS TRICK Students learn that increases in temperature speed up the rate of reaction, and use a spreadsheet to create a line chart, from which they identify the temperature needed to achieve a reaction at a specific time.
  • 65 THE EFFICIENT FUEL CO. Students compare the energy in different fuels and choose the one most efficient for a specific task. Using a spreadsheet application, they calculate the energy that has gone into the water and the energy per gram of fuel.
  • 67 HOME IMPROVEMENTS After comparing the insulating properties of double and single glazing, students learn to record the results using datalogging equipment.
  • 69 PUT THAT LIGHT OUT Students learn how to calculate the cost per minute of using electrical items, and use a spreadsheet to create automatic calculations of the amps, kilowatt-hour value and cost per minute for electrical items.

Teacher Testing Report

Good to see whole range of IT strands in use here. Very useful tasks. Pupils regularly research this information in science but not usually in this format this way was well received. They found the task much more stimulating.
