GNVQ Level 2 in Science: Information Technology

Price: £25.00
Age Range: KS4+

Chalkface GNVQ packs have been revised in line with the new guidelines for 2000. Key Skills remain an integral part of GNVQs as naturally occurring opportunities for the development of skills during teaching, learning and assessment. Fully cross-referenced to GNVQ specifications, these resources develop ICT skills in each GNVQ subject. Students use ICT in context to solve real problems and achieve realistic goals.

LESSONS

  • 1 FLAMING FERTILISER This page considers the potentially hazardous ingredient used in common fertilisers. Students design a handout, using DTP or WP software, informing farm workers of the dangers. They are then asked to scan a hazard symbol and incorporate this into their handout.
  • 3 NEW JOB Students are asked to research an area of employment using a database, and then design two suitable advertisements using WP software.
  • 5 TEA TRIAL Students use a spreadsheet to analyse the results of an investigation on liquids cooling. They are required to generate graphs and to write a brief report incorporating the graphical evidence.
  • 7 PRESSURE PROBLEM Students use a spreadsheet to perform calculations using the temperature/pressure formula. The information is then used to generate a graph.
  • 9 PRODUCTION COSTS Students use a spreadsheet to analyse the production costs of a chemical process. They are asked to produce a graph to show the level of production that is profitable. The results then have to be formatted for a presentation.
  • 11 RISK LIST Students consider the different risks associated with chemicals and create a database to organise this information. They then have to perform a query on the database.
  • 13 SORTING OUT SUGAR Students use WP software to convert rough notes into a well ordered article on sugar. They are then required to format the article for inclusion in a magazine.
  • 15 WORLD WIDE WEB Students are required to access the Internet to retrieve information on a science topic.
  • 17 REPORTING THE FACTS Students use a CD-ROM educational database to research a science topic and then copy this information into a word processor.
  • 19 ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS This page is intended as an exercise in using an image scanner and OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software to convert the scanned image back into text. Students are asked to use editing tools to make specific alterations to the text.
  • 21 SEEING CLEARLY Students design and write up a scientific investigation to determine the magnification of an optical instrument. They use OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) and drawing or graphics software to enable them to illustrate their work with a suitable diagram.
  • 23 WHAT'S THE USE? Students are required to produce a report on the usefulness of specific IT packages for a company.
  • 25 MATERIAL PROPERTIES Students have to decide which is the most appropriate IT software for presenting specific information on material properties.
  • 27 STUCK IN THE LIFT Students use a spreadsheet to work out information relating to lift safety. They are asked to generate a graph and bar chart to illustrate their findings.
  • 29 LABORATORY LOGO Students use a graphics package to design a logo for a chemical and laboratory supplies company, and then use WP software to create a flier advertising special discounts, into which they import the logo.
  • 31 DISSOLVING DUSTBINS Students use a spreadsheet to analyse the results of an investigation about the effect of acid rain on galvanised dustbins.
  • 33 WATT EQUIPMENT! Students consider the problem of the maintenance of laboratory electrical equipment. They organise data concerning it in a database and carry out a search.
  • 35 PERIODIC TABLE Students have to decide the best computer application for tabulating information from the Periodic Table. They then have to make specified changes to their table and format it for display.
  • 37 SELLING SEEDS Students are required to analyse results of an investigation into the growth of two types of barley seed and to enter the results in a spreadsheet. They then generate bar charts to compare the performance of the two seeds.
  • 39 HANDS OFF! Students design an electronic circuit which will provide a safety device for a pushchair, and use CAD (computer aided design) or a graphics package for drawing it out.
